The Present Meets the Future: Chelsea Beats 14-year old Carissa Moore to Win Roxy Pro

Carissa Moore didn’t officially win the Roxy Pro today, but she may as well have. You have to go all the way back to the teenaged days Martin Potter and Nicky Wood to think of anyone more precociously prodigious as Moore – and she’s even younger than they were when they hit the big stage. In chunky double-overhead (for her) surf she blew away Megan Abubo and got by Rebecca Woods with a great wave at the end of the heat, before reverting into a 14 year old against Chelsea Georgeson-Hedges in the final.

Chelsea, for her part, was on point all contest and took out in-from challengers Silvana Lima and Stephanie Gilmore to get to the final. She now finds herself in a pole position to regain the title. On the podium she was elated but also a little relieved that Carissa can’t officially join the tour till she’s 18. “It’s terrifying to think of what she’ll be doing in a few years,” Chelsea said.
Back in the present, Carissa already finds the women’s surf world at her feet (it was amazing how many of the top 45 men hung out to watch her heats today) having accomplished more for her age than other surfer male or female surfer in history. Amazing stuff.
In other news, Quiksilver Pro was off today but with the waves starting to pump and the winds looking to switch to a more favorable south-easterly direction, look for a thrilling finish in the next 2-3 days.
