ASP GRADE-2 OAKLEY PRO JUNIOR HITS NEWPORT BEACH SEPT. 20-23
Juniors Ratings War Intensifies After Arrambide’s Win
in New Jersey and
With Only Two North American Pro Junior Events Remaining
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., Sept. 14, 2007 – Continuing the
flow of major Southern California surf events this month, the
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-2 Oakley Pro
Junior returns to Newport Beach’s 54th Street Break next
week (Sept. 20-23). The event, held in conjunction with the Oakley
Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep®, (Sept. 18-23) and 19th
annual Newport Beach Surfing Championships (Sept. 22-23), will
unite 48 of the world’s top Juniors (under the age of 20)
to vie for a $10,000 prize purse and valuable ASP points.
The second to last event on the ASP North American Pro Junior
Series, the Oakley Pro Junior will play a significant role in
determining the four surfers who will advance to the Billabong
ASP World Junior Championships held in Narrabeen, Australia next
January. The final stop of the series will be the ASP Grade-3
Oakley Pro Junior in Santa Cruz next month, which will also serve
as the 2007 ASP North American Pro Junior Championships.
With only two opportunities for ASP North America’s top
Juniors to earn a result, the race has heated up and it’s
anyone’s game. Just two weeks ago, Cory Arrambide (Ventura,
CA) claimed his first ASP Pro Junior victory of the season in
New Jersey, rocketing him from fourth to first on the current
ASP North American Pro Junior ratings. He’s trailed closely
by Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Chris Waring (Seal
Beach, CA) and Adam Wickwire (Satellite Beach, FL), respectively.
The last two ASP North American Pro Junior events are also the
last two stops of the Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series,
which will award an additional $5,000 to the top three Pro Juniors
within the series. After stop one in Lower Trestles during the
Jeep Body Glove Surfbout in April, the current Macy’s California
Pro Junior standings are: Brent Dorrington (Gold Coast, AUS)
500 pts, Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL) 430 pts, Cory
Arrambide (Ventura, CA) 365 pts and Nick Rozsa (Oxnard, CA) 335
pts.
“It’s all coming down to the wire for the juniors
sitting in the top of the ratings. With a year end Trifecta cash
bonus, ASP North American title, and berths into the world championships
on the line, we are looking forward to an exciting points race
coming out of Newport and are stoked to provide this opportunity
to the competitors with the Oakley Pro Junior division of the
Macy’s Trifecta.” says ASG Events Director Sean Nielsen.
