QUARTERFINALISTS DECIDED AT DAY FOUR OF THE OAKLEY NEWPORT BEACH PRO PRESENTED BY JEEP®

NewsSAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (Sept. 21, 2007) – The Oakley Newport Beach Pro presented by Jeep has narrowed it down to the final 16 competitors following a stunning morning of performances to complete Round 5. The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) 2-Star event kicked off in beautiful, glassy two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at 56th Street this morning, creating the ideal canvas for the solid mix of established veterans and exciting up-and-comers to showcase their respective talents.

Kilian Garland (Santa Barbara County, CA) posted the highest heat total of the morning, a 13.80 out of a possible 20, dispatching of local talents Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA) and Brad Ettinger (Huntington Beach, CA).

“I’ve been staying down here in Newport a lot so I surf 56th all the time,” Garland said. “I had Andrew (Doheny) and Brad (Ettinger) in my heat so I knew I was going to have to get some good scores early. I’m super stoked I’m through to the quarters and hopefully I can keep on going.”

Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), who has already scalped an ASP WQS 2-Star this season at his home break in March, scored a sensational 11th-hour victory in his Round 5 clash, narrowly edging out lethal import Brent Dorrington (Gold Coast, AUS).

“It was a close heat out there for sure,” Byrne said. “The lead flip-flopped right until the end and I was on the bubble for quite a while. I was fortunate enough to grab a couple of runners right off the jetty and was able to claw my way back into it. The surfers out there are hungry, and it’s only going to get harder from here on.”

The big Round 5 upset this morning was the elimination of de facto Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presesnted by Jeep ratings leader Shaun Ward (Huntington Beach, CA) at the hands of Hawaiian ripper Daniel Jones (North Shore, HI) and Pro Junior wunderkind Cory Arrambide (Ventura, CA).

Heading into the final two days of competition, remaining Oakley Newport Beach Pro competitors Anthony Petruso (Malibu, CA), Adam Virs (Ventura, CA), Micah Byrne (Huntington Beach, CA), Dustin Barca (Hanalei, HI), Austin Ware (San Diego, CA) and defending Macy’s Trifecta Champion Nathan Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) all pose a threat to overtaking the 2007 Macy’s California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep ratings after Ward’s Round 5 elimination.

The men will hit the water tomorrow morning at 9 a.m .for the Quarterfinals before resting up for a big finish on Sunday.
