DAY ONE OF THE 2007 OAKLEY NEWPORT BEACH PRO PRESENTED BY JEEP® KICKS
OFF IN GREAT WAVES
DANA POINT, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2007) –The Oakley Newport Beach Pro
presented by Jeep® opened up in glassy two-to-three foot waves at 56th
Street this morning for Round 1 of competition, and the throngs of competitors
excelled throughout the day, continuing to push the high performance barriers.
The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series
(WQS) 2-Star event marks the second of three stops on the 2007 Macy’s
California Trifecta Surf Series presented by Jeep (an ASP North America
Specialty Series) and will play a pivotal role in determining the ’07
Trifecta Champion at the third and final stop in Santa Cruz next month.
Tyler Stanaland (Laguna Beach, CA), who will also be competing in the ASP
Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior later this week, was a surprise performer during
Round 1 action, earning the event high heat total of a 14.75 out of a possible
20 while eliminating local favorite Josh Hoyer (Newport Beach, CA).
“I knew these guys are pretty full on out here so I just tried to
get some scores under my belt early,” Stanaland said. “I
haven’t done too many events, but I’m through the first round
so hopefully I can stay consistent.”
Tommy Bursian (Isabella, PRI) punctuated the afternoon by scoring a sensational
come-from-behind victory in his Round 2 heat, ousting Jamie Parkhurst (San
Clemente, CA) and Layne Harrison (San Diego, CA) from Oakley Newport Beach
Pro competition. In the dying minutes of the heat, Bursian ripped
apart a bowling lefthander punctuated with an incredible fin release on
the end section, which netted him the day’s high single-wave score
of an 8.50 out of a possible 10.
“I was getting really frustrated out there because all the waves
I was getting were closing out,” Bursian said. “I was
running out of time so I took a medium-sized wave and did everything I
could on it. I’m stoked I got the score and hopefully I can
move through some more rounds.”
Wavewatch, official forecasters for the Oakley Newport Beach Pro presented
by Jeep, have called for a steady run of South swell throughout the waiting
period with several days seeing chest-to-head-high surf.
Tomorrow will see Rounds 2 and 3 of the Oakley Newport Beach Pro presented
by Jeep completed as the event whittles the draw down to the remaining
64 competitors in the ASP WQS 2-Star event.
Round 3 action will see high seeds Dane Ward (San Clemente, CA), Cory Arrambide
(Ventura, CA), Travis Beckmann (Vero Beach, FL) among others battle it
out in the punchy bowls of 56th St.
